BIOGRAPHYWith over 40 years of significant general management and technical actuarial experience in various roles within the life insurance industry in the United States, Tom Bakos formed his own actuarial consulting practice in 2000. His primary area of practice is life insurance. He specializes in the development of intellectual property and innovation in the insurance industry. Tom's prior experience has included Chief Actuary for BISYS Insurance Services, a full service outsourcer for the support and marketing services required in the sale of life, annuity, group health care, and long term care insurance products. For ten years, from 1989 - 1999 Tom was Vice President and Life Actuary for Guardian Life Insurance Company of America where he was responsible for all actuarial functions related to the individual life line of business.
In
the 20 years prior to joining Guardian, Tom filled
similar actuarial roles in both large and small, stock
and mutual life insurance companies including:
Integrated Resources Life Insurance Company in
New Jersey; Security Mutual Life Insurance
Company in Binghampton, NY; Lincoln American
Life Insurance Company in Memphis, TN; and CNA
Life Insurance in
Chicago. Tom has been a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA) since 1972. Tom was elected by the members of the Society of Actuaries (SoA) to a three year term on the Board of Governors and served from October, 2002 through October, 2005. He has recently been elected an officer of the SoA (Vice President) for a term of two years, 2008 - 2010. The SoA is an education and research organization with over 16,000 members in over 30 countries. Tom is also a member of the American Academy of Actuaries (AAA) Council on Professionalism and serves as Chairman of the AAA Committee on Professional Responsibility.
Tom has participated on numerous occasions as a
presenter, panelist, or workshop chairman at meetings of the
SoA.
